Oh, this brings back very fond memories of blackberry picking where I grew up in Pennsylvania. There was a big patch of wild blackberry bushes at the edge of a wood across teh street from our house in Altoona. They were big and juicy and sweet and tart all at the same time. My mother always used to warn me to look out for snakes in the berry patch, and I wondered if snakes ate blackberries. Never did see any snakes there.
What kind of snakes? I never saw any snakes near the blackberry bushes in Iowa, but they were ALWAYS surrounded by chiggers!! (Never saw them either, until after they'd dined on me.)
i went to pick up a garter snake one time, and it BIT me! and the bite was sore for weeks! which makes me think i was picking up a baby rattler instead (they have those in that part of MN). i'm lucky my finger didn't fall off!

Kay: I love them all except for the seeds (same with raspberries). They get in between my teeth.

Mom was never specific about the kind. I guess they were the rare blackberry-eating snakes! All I ever saw around there were grass and garter snakes.
